marketing attribute

So, what is the most important attribute for a marketer to have?

Before we can answer that question, we first need to understand what marketing is.

Marketing is the act of promoting and selling a product or service.

Discuss: What attribute do you think would help a person promote and sell a product or service?

Fortunately, we can ask professional marketers what the answer to this question is. According to Brian Bond, former CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) of Ancestry.com and vice president of marketing at a number of other companies, the most important attribute a marketer can have is Empathy.

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Discuss: How does understanding the feelings of another person help you to sell a product or service to them?

By being empathetic we can better raise awareness of important issues and prepare advertisements and other forms of marketing to emotionally move a person to buy our product or service. In order to become a great marketer we need to practice empathy daily so that it becomes easier and easier. Try to think about how others are feeling before you interact with them. Once you understand how they are feeling, think about what you can say to influence that person for good. One of the best ways to practice empathy is to think of what you can do or say to help somebody who is having a bad day. Give it a shot!
