Jiminy Cricket Conscience

Walt Disney’s film Pinocchio is about a wooden boy puppet brought to life. He is as ignorant as can be about the world and to help him, the fairy that brought him to life appoints a small cricket named Jiminy to be his conscience and guide for him. Jiminy tries to warn him about dangers and how to treat others, but Pinocchio often ignores him. One of the main characteristics about Pinocchio is his nose which grows every time he tells a lie. Jiminy Cricket gets pretty frustrated with him for ignoring his warnings and Pinocchio gets into a lot of trouble after ignoring Jiminy.

Inside each of us is a Jiminy Cricket, or conscience, that lets us know when we are doing something good or bad. If you’re religious, you might call this the Holy Spirit or Light of Christ. Others might call it a gut reaction, intuition, or instinct. Regardless, it is a real thing and if you pay attention to it, you will find greater happiness and joy in life.

Discuss: Right before you were about to do something you knew you shouldn’t do, have you ever noticed a warning voice or feeling not to do it?

Discuss: Have you ever felt a thought strike you to do something good for someone? Maybe it was to say something nice or buy them a candy bar?

Both of these are instances of our conscience trying to help us move forward with minimal pain and maximum happiness. Try to make a habit of paying attention to your feelings before you act and think about what you are about to do and you will be happier.
