Apple Juice or Apples?

Apple juice and apples

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” But does it matter what form that apple comes in?

Discuss: Why is eating an apple healthier than drinking apple juice?

Unless it’s pure and unsweetened, apple juice contains a lot of sugar and very little of the healthy part of the apple. The fruit is healthier than the juice (though we all like a drink of juice sometimes) because it contains many nutrients that do not make it through the juicing process such as potassium and fiber. Sweetened apple juice is also full of added sugars that are detrimental to a person’s health. Doctors recommend unsweetened apple juice as the best alternative to an apple.

The USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) recommends that we eat from five different food groups each day. These foods are called the food pyramid.

Discuss: Can you name the five food groups?

1. Grains
2. Vegetables
3. Fruits
4. Milk
5. Meat & Beans

Discuss: With school, work, and other activities it can be difficult to remember to eat healthily. What are ways that we can remember to eat our grains, veggies, fruits, milk, and protein each day?

Eating a balanced diet from each of the major food groups will keep you healthier and full of energy.
