Being Brave

“The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” Nelson Mandela

Discuss: If you had to pick a personal attribute or characteristic important to success in life, what would it be?

Your discussion may have listed off some of the following attributes: honesty, loyalty, friendliness, kindness, justice, mercy, morality, faith, hope, or charity. These are all certainly important and contribute to real success in life, but I want to suggest another one (which you may have mentioned).

Have you heard of a “comfort zone?” A comfort zone is an area you feel comfortable and safe in.

Anything that stretches and makes you feel uncomfortable is outside your comfort zone. Some people’s comfort zone might be so small that talking to anyone stresses them out. Others might be comfortable speaking in public. Not many people start life with a large comfort zone, but it is important to expand it as you grow older, because expanding your comfort zone means you are willing to try new things which will help you to grow as an individual.

What characteristic allows a person leave their comfort zone? In this writer’s opinion, courage is the attribute. Courage is a mental and moral firmness to take action. America would not exist as a nation if not for the courage of our Founding Fathers.

Discuss: Have you ever done something that is outside your comfort zone?

Discuss: What are some things that are outside your comfort zone?

Discuss: What one thing can you do this week to get outside your comfort zone?
