You may remember this famous quote by John Adams, the second president of the United States of America.
“Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other.”

The reason is because America was designed to be a great experiment in self-government, meaning, people are free to choose how to live as long as they don’t violate someone else’s rights.
Recall the first paragraph of the Declaration of Independence:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
If one person believes theft is wrong and another says it’s OK to steal if you are in poverty, society can’t survive because they don’t share common beliefs and values. Without a common set of values, people won’t respect a common set of rights.
The Founding Fathers of America used the Judeo-Christian values espoused in the Bible as a foundation of our rights because rights must originate from a point higher than man. They came from God so they can’t be taken away by man. Removing morality and religion from a people destroy the ability of a people to recognize our basic natural rights because everyone turns to their own opinion instead of a common absolute point of reference.
As further evidence, consider this statement by Joseph Stalin, dictator of the Soviet Union from 1929 till his death in 1953. He killed millions of his own people to enforce communism.
“America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: Its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within.”
